The starter power cables should have insulation colours to match the phase to which they are connected, that is brown for phase L1, black for phase L2 and grey for phase L3. The power cables of reversing starters should have insulation colours to match the phase to which they are connected when connected for clockwise rotation. Cables with a csa of 150mm2 or greater are not available with coloured insulation, therefore coloured tight fitting sleeves of the relevant phase colour should be applied at the points of termination to these cables.
The control system has two voltages 110vac and 24Vdc as well as current transformer circuits and for some starters thermistor circuits using different wire colours simplifies the task of differentiating between the circuits when carrying out maintenance or testing and it increases safety as the maintenance staff can easily identify the voltage of the different circuits.
The base colour selected for 110Vac wiring is yellow with a stripe of brown to identify the phase cable and a blue stripe to identify the neutral cable, similarly for 24Vdc wiring the base colour selected is white with a red stripe to identify the positive cable and a black stripe to identify the negative cable, for current transformer secondary circuits the base colour selected is violet with a brown stripe for phase L1, a black stripe for phase L2, a grey stripe for phase L3 and a blue stripe for neutral, for thermistor circuits the base colour selected is pink without stripes.
